Highland Clachan excavated at Tummel Forest
The booklet is courtesy of Joan Park, Perth, whose father Hamish was Chief Forester at Tummel Forest when the Clachan and the nearby Ring Fort were excavate by Dr Margaret Stewart with team members drawn from Breadalbane, Strathearn, Abertay and Stirling Field and Archaeological Societies.
This leaflet gives a clear and precise explanation of varying functions of the three buildings over period at least from the early 18th century through to the mid or later 19th century. The community initially may have subsisted on rearing cattle and growing early forms of barley then after 1745 transitioned into more sheep rearing and production of wool products. There is an interesting explanation of how and why the corn drying kiln may have been modified to burn limestone.
The leaflet was published by Forestry Commission, Aberdeen: the text written up by Dr Margaret Stewart and the very clear drawings executed by Kenneth McGavin.
This leaflet explains the photograph as shown in No 3812 of this archive. The PDF below shows the full leaflet.
