Inshriach Forest Compartment Boundary Posts
The image is courtesy of Brian Duff, Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District or as now North Region.
Brian has sent in an image of a large square cross section post (about 6x6 ins) with chamfered top most likely made from oak. The writer recalls seeing similar posts in the Bin Forest, Huntly, on a dry knoll where they had survived for many decades. They seem to have been placed at junctions of cross rides which had been laid out in grid iron fashion in the early 1930s. On some of the faces 2.5 inch long brass numbers were fixed but, when seen, were in the process of falling off. It is assumed they were the then compartment numbers.
Does anyone recall seeing these posts and numbers elsewhere?
