A forestry planting site on former arable land at this time when there was a push to plant more land at lower elevations and where farming was having a more difficult time on land that was not suitable for growing grain crops.
Geordie says, “It is a good job my old father never saw these pictures – good arable ground being turned over to trees. He and I were breaking in hill land – bracken, whin and broom – pulling out roots with a wee grey Fergie tractor, then trying to plough it with a single plough, each furrow about 8 inches wide – it took a lot of time – at Moyness about 6 miles from Nairn in 1957!”
In those days (1957) there were fairly sizable grants for breaking out hill land into agriculture or grazing fields, adding lime and generally ‘field greening’ up the countryside.
