Location of New England Sawmill Unit No 3 and areas felled
Some building and crofts showed up in the back ground of some photographs. Using these images and also one of a view from the sawmill to across the River Carron the location is judged to be as in the 1903 Ordnance Survey map. The name Bailenacoarach for the nearest farm or croft in Hilton has now evolved into Balnachrick.
The records indicate that each mill unit produced, on average, almost two million Board Feet Measure (American measuring convention) of sawn timber products for the war effort. This equates to just over 46,000 cu m of sawn timber and if calculated backwards to this could represent around 73,000 cu m of standing trees or about 45-50 acres.
Alternative calculations and estimates welcomes. There was more than enough timber in these locations, much of it planted after the Napoleonic wars, to accommodate the 10 units and most likely the Canadian Timber Corps worked on some of the residue after the New England units had disbanded.
