Letter from Nature Conservancy Staff Edinburgh
The notes are courtesy of Duncan Menzies, Banchory, who was stationed at Rannoch at the time.
In response to a letter from Duncan menzies the Regional Officer for Northern and Central Scotland, Nancy J Gordon, has described some of the processes and time periods over which some of the peat deposits on Rannoch Moor built up, She also estimates the period of when the forest was at its maximum development and their gradual demise following the build up of peat with remnants hanging onto the drier moraines. She does say however that a great deal is unknown about the Moor and all the processes involved but does point Duncan to alternative research work and publications.
