Royal Scottish Forestry Society visit to Rannoch September 1966
The notes are courtesy of Duncan Menzies, Banchory, who was stationed at Rannoch at the time.
A brief two page set of notes on Rannoch beginning with the initial acquisition date and area acquired through to 1966 when the total land holding was then 47,447. A breakdown of the land holding is provided with a total of plantations as over 8 thousand acres and with a plantable reserve of over 11 thousand acres. Interestingly 150 acres has been described as holdings which is a late period for these to have been formed. Unplantable hill ground and land used for agriculture makes up the bulk of the rest of the land holding.
The planting area totals for each year from 1949 are listed with the latter years running at 700-800 acres per year. Staff is listed as four foresters including a trainee and thirty five workers including two trappers. The itinerant ploughmen and road workers add up to an equivalent of additional four men and the occasional loan of labour to nearby Glenerrochty Forest is calculated as about less one man year. It does mention that part of the labour resource is of 15 men and youths housed in the Forestry Commission hostel at Bridge of Gaur.
