Booklet 76 Silvicultural Principles of Upland Restocking by P M Tabbush 1988
This Booklet was obtained with the kind assistance of Ian Trow, Wales, in response to the queries on the names and descriptions of some of the restock ground preparation machines featured earlier on the website.
The booklet focuses much on the detail of plant quality and treatment, advantages of suitable planting site preparation and also features quite a number of machines that were uses to prepare restocking sites for planting. This was generally prior to the widespread use of tracked excavators to mound the sites. The machines that were used most frequently were the powered disc trenchers which were able to handle quite severe brash conditions and on a second pass could then cultivate a shallow trench on the cleared or partially cleared strips.

Paul Tabbush highlights the advantages of careful treatment of the planting stock in the onsite storage, transport and actual planting process stages of restocking. Well treated planting stock responded significantly better in the first years that those roughly and careless handled.
