Protecting Forests from fires in the Forestry Commission circa 1965
This 44 minute recording by the late George Dey, District Officer, latterly based at Banchory, is thought to have originated around 1965. The digital version is courtesy of his daughter Sheila Young, Aberdeenshire. There is a mention of the Rhonda valley the area in South Wales where George worked from 1964 to around 1970.
The subject of his recording is the management and administration of the forest fire protection work as per the Forestry Commission guide codes of that time. His subject description begins with some cost analysis and then continues onto:
1. Suggested spending limits per season
2. A description of the term ‘Fire danger’ and ‘Hazard’
3. A description of the ‘Risks of fire’
4. The planning of expenditure on Fire Protection and the options available
5. Description of fire equipment such as Hathaway pumps etc
6. Use of fire towers, telephone and radio systems
7. Organising the control system in the event of a fire.
The tape actually did continue on but was designed to accompany slide images and was much less informative without these.
