Rannoch Forest worker’s hostel 1962
The images were courtesy of the late Sandy Sandilands, Banchory, who spent a short period of his early career at Rannoch.
The hostel at Bridge of Gaur at the west end of Loch Rannoch where all the 'single' chaps lodged. At this time Duncan Menzies was the forester covering this side of the forest and as a single forester he also lived here but had overall responsibility for the day to day running of the hostel.
“The low temperatures during the 1962/3 winter froze the water supply for nearly 3 months. The water tanks were topped up daily with 50 gallons of water by bucket from the River Gaur after breaking the ice. On returning on Sunday night, one lad found his 'hot' water bottle frozen in his bed. The hostel was the manse in its previous life.”
