This particular winter was long and cold with frosts down to zero Fahrenheit and periodic snow falls and wind from December 1962 until well into March 1963. Finding meaningful work for the teams of workmen was almost impossible as forest sites were all frozen and covered in snow plus the roads were also very often blocked or impassable. The great standby was brashing the lower branches off the well grown trees to allow people access into the forest to mark and thin out the crop. Clearing snow from fence lines to prevent deer and hares crossing over was another ‘snowy weather job’
