A good image of the trestles holding the lining out boards – a very practical design from lots of experience. The right hand side of the trestles hold all the empty boards that have to be filled. On the left the current board has being filled in situ by hand and waiting to be picked up and taken to the line. Note the two pieces of wood projecting upwards at a bit of an angle which supports the open hinged half of the lining out board while the lower half is being filled by hand with young seedlings. Once filled, as here, the top half is swung down and sandwiches the seedlings trapping them in their spaced filled positions especially so when the ring locks are slid down the long hinges.

The screen shelters the workers standing filling the boards and reduces the drying out of the seedlings. Jim Murray is coming to collect the board and behind him can be seen the nursery tractor and plough, In a further distance is a large house – East Woodlands?

If I remember correctly the screen was mainly to prevent the slightest breeze blowing the plants out off the board before you could get it closed. Comment left on 22 November 2019 at 12:27 by leslie phillip
