Date Added: 12 January 2009 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1980 Picture No: 455

This picture shows the staff of the Forestry Commission’s Chapelhall Works in 1980 welcoming the then Chair, Sir David Montgomery, to view the recently completed works extension. Sir David is in the back row with the tie, with the workshop foreman, George Stewart to his left. The workshop manger Jimmy Thomson is standing at the front second from the right.

Chapelhall workshop built over 200 tractor mounted cablecranes, the Chapelhall Skyeline, and over 100 were still in use when this photograph was taken. See this link - Forestry Commission - Chapelhall Workshop

Wev’e got three faces, can we fill in any more?

The man at the right, standing beside the chap with the glasses, looks very much like Donald Morrison from Glenbranter Workshop. However, if this was 1980, he may well have been retired by then as he died this year (2012) aged over 100. Comment left on 08 November 2012 at 23:13 by Andy MacNicol
I started work as Assistant Workshop Manager at Chapelhall in November 1985, and it is amazing how many of the staff pictured had departed from CEW in intervening 5 years. However several of them were still there;-
Back row at the left with the hat on is Tommy Ledgerwood (Welder).
Back row at the opposite end from George Stewart is Norrie Grant (Fitter), and in the centre of the back row next to Sir David, with the hat on is Walter Clark (Welder).
Middle row in front of George Stewart and Sir David is Tommy McLoughlin (Turner), and two to his left I think is Norrie Grants brother (who had left by the time I started).
Two to the left of Jimmy Thomson is John (Stevie) Smith (Fitter),
And to his left I think might be Jack Brownlee (Driver Handyman)
Front centre is John Kasper (Fitter), and on his right with the tie I assume is Eric Shanks (although I never met him).
