Forestry Commission Forest District and Conservancy Boundaries 1985
One of a series of maps and drawings found in old ex military map cases stored in the loft of the Fort August Forest office and recovered by Grant Macintosh.
This is the first official map showing the new Forest District structure that was ushered in around 1983/84 and the then Conservancies (old style) dropping from four to three in 1984/85 with the Aberdeen office closing.
This major restructuring exercise heralded the management change from 88 individual forest units in Scotland headed by Chief or Head Foresters to 30 Forest District units each headed by a Forest District Manager. The District Officer and Forester Grade structures had been amalgamated and the District Offices kitted out for the computer age with better links to the head office computers, more admin staff and gradual increase in digitised recording, planning, finance and mapping.
By 1985 The Forestry Commission Estate in Scotland was around 742,000 hectares with 531,000 hectares under forest and woodland. Of course the amalgamations and consolidations continued and by 2017 the number of Forest Districts had changed to from an initial 30 to 10 which in turn gave way to 5 regions by 2019. Where next?
