Glenshiel Forest planting and disposal map No 2
One of a group of hand drawn maps and drawings found in old ex military map cases stored in the loft of the Fort August Forest office and recovered by Grant Macintosh. This is one of a series of maps, again drawn on linen material, that tells a small part of the story of one forest – the story of land being offered for planting, some parts assessed as being suitable, land purchased and parts planted up and then surplus unplanted land sold off.
This map indicates the compartments delineated and numbered from No 1 through to No 19 with planting beginning in 1925 and up to 1933. Several areas are shown to have been ‘handed over’ to Major Wilkie in 1932 (possibly the estate from which the Forestry Commission purchased the land initially), one area is leased as grazing to Cluanie Inn and unusually one area feued to the Northern Infirmary.
