The Forestry Commission’s Objectives circa 1980
This Forestry Commission booklet also headed as Policy and Procedure paper No 1 is courtesy of Dave Stewart whose father George was a forester for many years in the Forestry Commission.
The booklet as shown below here as an attached PDF below is basically a reprint of earlier Objectives documents as produced in 1975 and 1977.
The booklet sections start with a very brief over view of past objectives from the initial formation of the Forestry Commission in 1919 and then summarises the new policies following a Government Review in 1974. These cover the roles of the Forestry Commission in its roles as the Forestry Authority and also as the national Forest Enterprise.
The Forestry Authority Objectives have the following headings:
1.To advance the knowledge and understanding of forestry and trees in the countryside
2.To develop and ensure the best use of the country’s timber resources and promote efficiency and development of the home timber industry
3.To undertake research relevant to the needs of forestry
4.To combat forest and tree pests and diseases to initiate Plan Health Orders when appropriate
5.To advise and to assist with safety and training in forestry
6.To administer controls and schemes for assisting private woodland owners and, by so doing, encourage the practice of sound forestry ................etc
The national Forest Enterprise have the following headings:
1.To develop forestry and increase the production of wood for existing industries, or industries yet to be established, by the extension and improvement of the forest estate
2.To protect and enhance the environment
3.To provide recreational facilities
4.To stimulate and support the local economy in areas of depopulation by development of forests, including new plantations, and of wood using industry
5.In pursuit of these objectives estate, to manage the estate economically and efficiently, and to account for its activities to Ministers and Parliament. (New emphasis on this last paragraph)
