Woodland Census initiated in 1918
One of a series of maps and drawings found in old ex military map cases stored in the loft of the Fort August Forest office and recovered by Grant Macintosh.
The details of this census are not known so far and any information is most welcome. This could well have been one of the first full national woodland surveys of UK or GB and may have been undertaken by military staff as one map had an army rank after the name.
This area is part of the 6 inch map that covers a area east of Foyers on Loch Ness and indeed one can read a hand written detail which shows the Aluminium Company’ Estate boundary. There are numerous Census annotation stamps with a varied selection of upper case lettering, an area in acres and lastly often a smaller number on the bottom section. See large image.
Any ideas on the letter sequence and the lower numbers would be very welcome as would any information on the 1918 woodland census.
