Strathyre Forest Bothy – The end
Image sent in by Willie Fleming, Polmont who worked in Strathyre Forest as an apprentice Forest Craftsman and stayed in the hostel for a time around 1957-58. The year 1970 is just an estimate.
The hostel or bothy would have been ‘home’ for a large number of forestry workers over the years. It may initially have been built for itinerant workers at the start of the formation of Strathyre Forest when large numbers of workers were required to plant up the surrounding hills. It was certainly used as a hostel for a great many young boys when they were being trained as Skilled Forest Workers. The building was also have been used as accommodation for mobile forest workers such as ploughmen and possibly also for forest road workers who moved from forest to forest when road building programmes were started.
Any more stories of people who used this building would be very welcome.
