Ceannacroc Forest Fire Map

Ceannacroc Forest Fire Map

Date Added: 04 April 2019 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1960 Picture No: 4421

One of a series of maps and drawings found in old ex military map cases stored in the loft of the Fort August Forest office and recovered by Grant Macintosh.

The year is uncertain but estimated as 1956 but could be well out. A very nice hand drawn map of all the forest areas in Cennacroc Forest in Glen Moriston on the side of Loch Ness. All the areas have compartments outlined and must have been at least newly planted.

The blue circles indicate a good source of water for fire fighting from a local burn or in some cases a fire tank. Public telephones are noted as well as the location of the Head Foresters house and Forest Office (extreme right of map).

At the time of this map there were no forest roads and the only means of access for vehicles were over a few rough tractor or Jeep tracks as indicated.

Any more details and notes on fire incidents here would be very welcome.
