Newton Rigg College — Training in Forestry
This Forestry Commission paper is courtesy of Dave Stewart whose father George was a forester for many years in the Forestry Commission. The origin of the booklet was an international course on Work Study in Forestry held in Wymondham and Newton Rigg Colleges in 1971 and for which a series of papers were prepared. These papers were compiled into Bulletin 47 in 1973.
This paper by the then head of the College A G Pyman describes the history of training in forestry going back 1874 with particular reference to four training establishments of which Aspatria College in Cumberland trained people in forestry from many parts of the world with preparation of students for the Forestry Certificate and the Diploma Examinations of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland. Newton Rigg, focussing on agricultural training, opened in 1896.
There is a mention of the Lampard –Vachell Committee in 1961 and its role in recommending that a forestry training centre be set up hence the first set of six week courses were initiated at Newton Rigg in Jan 1963. The paper goes on to describe the variety and type of course on offer at 1971. There is a small section on the need for an Industry Training Board and a foot note to say that a Forestry Training Council had been established under the chairmanship of Prof John D Matthews of Dept of Forestry, Aberdeen University.
