Upland ways — free of Sitka spruce!
Ruth Robertson, Peebles, has provide an old newspaper cutting of a short four verse poem which she particularly enjoyed as it expressed precisely her love of walking for long periods in the quiet areas whether it was in the open border hills or in among its forests.
She recalls that with her favourite dog at foot she enjoyed the traffic free green glades, observing wildlife in and among the trees, the glimpses of distant views from clearings as well as taking in the wide rolling ‘heather bent’ vistas from the open slopes and hill tops.
‘There is no better cure for ills
Than when the mind retraces
The peace and silence o the hills
The solitude o lonely places’
Can anyone identify the author W.E. and say when it was written?
