Decimal Hoppus Tables by S E Wilson
The original booklet is courtesy of Dave Stewart, Dufftown, from a collection of papers belonging to his father George Stewart a forester for many years with the Forestry Commission.
It is interesting to note that the author S E Wilson was Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of the National Home Grown Timber Council which was initiated by the Forestry Commission in 1931, suspended for the duration of the war and finally dissolved in 1949. There is a dedication to William Wilson who for 60 years was a home grown timber merchant and father of the author.
The booklet is mainly a ready reckoner for tree volume in hoppus feet from the length in feet and the mid length quarter girth and largely a modern reworked version of Edward Hoppus early ready reckoners published in various forms from 1737 onwards. In fact the author refers to and quotes him in the text pages leading up to the tables. One other point emphasised by the author is the term ‘cubic foot’ or ‘cubic foot quarter girth’ which he terms as inaccurate and misleading when using the volume measurements gained from the Hoppus system on round timber or tree stems. The term should always be ‘Hoppus Foot’ defined ‘as the unit of solid contents according to the Hoppus system of measuring round timber’.
