The page of staff names and designations is of the staff who occupied the Work Study section of the Forestry Commission at this time. Most of the District Officer and Forester staff only worked for a ‘tour of duty’ of around 3-5 years before heading back to more traditional forest roles.
Many of the staff were based in teams around the country and generally were involved in several work roles. The work role generally associated with work study was evaluating existing work practices and producing a set of tables and variations of the standard times to carry out the work practice or job. The other was evaluating work flow and timing the stages particularly with the introduction of new machinery and equipment to arrive at the most cost and ergonomically effective work sequences. On some locations staff sought new innovative ways of using existing machines or modifying machines and equipment to increase output or improve performance in forestry operations. A key element was then the training of staff in these new methods and systems.
Following the above innovations, new sets of standard time and variation tables were produced for all the new operations and added to the portfolio of costed jobs. In all the cases paid rates for the job unit could be worked out by the supervising foresters. Whether these calculated rates were acceptable to workers carrying out the work in very different locations was always open to discussion – and could be very lively at times!
The work study teams were also called in by Conservancy and District staff to look at a single particular operation and produce a set of times again with the aim of setting a rate for the job.
