Viewing the sand dunes Culbin Forest

Date Added: 09 December 2018 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1950 Picture No: 4319

This image was found by Avril MacLennan in the Forestry Commission Office at Golspie (North Highland Forest District) as part of a presentation. No details however were available.

A stark image of the conditions facing the foresters and workers who were attempting to plant up and stabilise the moving sand dunes in areas such as Culbin and Roseisle. No year is indicated and 1950 is guessed as well as the location of Culbin possibly indicated by the scale of the dune behind the observer.

The old method of planting marram grass to stabilise these large moving systems was not very successful and hence the use of vegetation, branches and small tree stems was required to thatch and hold down the blowing sand.
