Thatching the sand dunes – Culbin Forest
This image was found by Avril MacLennan in the Forestry Commission Office at Golspie (North Highland Forest District) as part of a presentation. No details however were available.
A great image of two men working in what could well be Culbin Forest collecting branches, small trees possibly from a small clear fell or heavy thinning of some of the older trees . No year is indicated and 1953 is a very rough estimate from type of clothing worn.
Note the four wheel trailer behind which is hitched a second one. The men are loading the branch wood and small stems with what looks like a straw harvesting long handled pitch fork and the material placed and firmed down by the man on top. All very reminiscent of a farming harvesting scene.
Any comments would be very welcome.
