Photograph courtesy of William Fleming, Polmont who worked in Strathyre Forest as an apprentice Forest Craftsman and stayed in the hostel for a time around 1957-58.

The chemical spray called Simazine was used frequently at the tree nurseries in the Forfar area in the nineteen fifties and sixties, I wonder if it is still in use today.? Comment left on 30 November 2018 at 13:30 by Leslie Phillip

It's banned in Europe, I'm not sure about elsewhere. Like many other chemicals, its hazards only became known after it had been used for many years. I hate to think of the long term effects of some of the chemicals we used. One in particular, that I can't remember the name of, dissolved the floor of a van after it was spilled.
