Date Added: 19 September 2018 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1952 Picture No: 4250

This booklet is courtesy of Brian Duff from Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District.

This booklet appears to have been one of the very early Technical Notes produced by the Forestry Commission mainly for its own staff. Technical Notes are still currently produced by Forestry Commission Forest Research and it would be interesting to find out when this one was first produced and what topics subsequent Sections covered. Please see the attched PDF for the complete booklet.

The booklet is packed with detail, guidance and advice beginning with Reference Lists of:
1. Forest Trees and Shrubs
2. Soil Indicators
3. Miscellaneous Plants
4. Nursery Weeds
5. Common Birds

The following Chapter Numbers:
1. Lay out of Plantations
2. Preparation of Ground
3. Fencing and Warrening
4. Choice of Species (Conifers and Hardwoods)
5. Planting
6. Beating-Up
7. Weeding
8. Racking, Cleaning and Brashing
9. Definition of Tending and Thinning Operations
10. Pruning
11. Underplanting

Any comments and pointers as to the other very early titles in this series would be very welcome.
