5th day Visit notes to Forestry Areas

The document is courtesy of Glenbranter Forest office staff with particular thanks to Ian Adams who has stored these old files for many years.
This professionally produced booklet was provided as a hand out to a visiting delegation from the 12th Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations. This record is the sixth of eight parts constructed to show the details of the various daily tour notes of the locations visited (See record numbers 4191-4213).

The District Officer here is George Dey along with Bob Crozier as Head Forester. There is a description of Inverliever Forest and surrounding areas, the geology, soils and climate along with the history of the forest and its planting. A brief mention is made of the fact that this was where the first attempt was made to correlate the choice of tree species with existing vegetation types in this country.
The problems of access and transport in the isolated location are explained along with the attempts to overcome the difficulties of timber extraction and its delivery to end users. It seems over the years they had tried horse, tractor, cables and wheeled machines as well as various water craft. This was before the days of tractor powered cable cranes which came on the scene here just a few years later.

The guide covers the problems of insufficient labour, lack of housing and problems of boating people and products across the loch. The group cross by launch, inspect a raft of timber logs, areas of trees planted in 1909 – 1915 and a number of sample plots. Afterwards the destination for the evening is Lochgilphead.
