2nd day Visit notes to Forestry Areas
The document is courtesy of Glenbranter Forest office staff with particular thanks to Ian Adams who has stored these old files for many years.
This professionally produced booklet was provided as a hand out to a visiting delegation from the 12th Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations. This record is the third of eight parts constructed to show the details of the various daily tour notes of the locations visited (See record numbers 4191-4213).
This day starts with visit to Faskally Dam and quite a detailed description of the Tummel Hydro scheme, the Brown Trout research laboratory, Faskally uneven aged woods and Forester Training School.
The next item are the seed orchards at Ledmore where the main focus is production of seed from six origins of Scots pine and eight origins of Douglas fir. There is a description of the orchard layout and history.
The final part of the day is at Ledmore Forest Nursery with District Officers T A Woodburn (should that be D A Woodburn - David Woodburn?) and R T Larsen with A Rose the Forester in charge. There is a fairly lengthy description of the nursery, its origins and future plans. The main focus is on the mechanical innovations pioneered or adapted at the nursery. The machines are described in order, Lining Out Plough, Ledmore six drill seed sower and grit distributer, Ledmore undercutter, the Gunn plant lifter, the steerage weed hoe, Ferguson single furrow reversible plough, Oliver single furrow plough and sub soiler.
Can anyone say if this seed orchard still exists?
