Roadless Skidder at Elibank Forest

Roadless Skidder at Elibank Forest

Date Added: 16 August 2018 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1978 Picture No: 4167

The photographs are courtesy of Stuart Mitchell, Peebles area, who formerly worked at Glentress Forest.

Stuart has written that this is Welsh Hamilton operating the skidder at Elibank Forest and again the year is uncertain but around the late 1970s is a possibility or early 1980s.

Not sure of the Roadless history on skidders- can anyone help?

This is the production version of the Forestry Commission designed hydrostatic tractor Skidder developed at the Alice Holt engineering workshop. A total of twelve of these machines were built by Roadless Traction Limited and delivered to the Forestry Commission but most were withdrawn from service early with the decline in skidding operations.
