Double drum winch set up Glentress Forest
The photographs are courtesy of Stuart Mitchell, Peebles area, who formerly worked at Glentress Forest.
John Tammy and Ian Smart appear to be in the process of dismantling a winch set up possibly with the help of other people going by the action of Ian who may be speaking to someone out of shot.
The location is Shieldgreen in Glentress Forest and the Igland Double Drum Winch fitted to a Ford 4000 tractor FC62893. The trees which look like larch have been felled and sned then left in the length and hauled out tip first. According to an old map this area was planted around 1935/36. The view of the site is very limited but there is a large volume at each set up point as seen in the next photograph on this website Record No 4165 which could indicate a clearfell.
Is the house in the back ground a former Forest Worker Holding also called Shieldgreen?
