Kessock and part Kilcoy Forests — species ma

Date Added: 28 May 2018 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1950 Picture No: 4106

Maps are courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District and show the forest areas originally Kessock and part of Kilcoy Forests in the Black Isle.

This hand drawn map has no date and has been estimated roughly as 1950 but this required further investigation. The map is very unusual in that it is a species representation map of the forest plantations rather than a detail of planting year progression. The code of colours, shading and cross hatching is difficult to decipher and all is not fully understood and any further comments would be very welcome.

The following may be correct:

White back ground with tree symbol – Scots pine
Red tint horizontal hatching with and without tree symbol – Sitka spruce
Green horizontal hatching - Norway spruce
Blue tint vertical hatching – European larch
Green tint vertical hatching – Lodgepole pine
Dark blue or black horizontal hatching – Douglas fir
Partial hatching may be mixtures for example - larch and Scots pine
Green wash appears to represent - Acquired old planted Scots pine

A lovely map over which somebody spent quite a considerable amount of time bearing in mind that these were the only means of visualising how the plantations looked from a species point of view – no aerial colour photography or Google Maps!
