Obviously a superior plus tree Scots pine had been identified in the Castle Grant estate just north of Grantown on Spey. Here someone is taking aim with shot gun to shoot down the tips of several of its branches as scion material for use in grafting onto rootstock.

Can anyone identify the man?

Colin is using a long barrel shot gun and 8LG shot to shoot down shoots from the upper third of the crown which were then grafted on to SP rootstocks at either Alice Holt or Grizedale. There were more than 10 selected trees at Castle Grant and 10 grafts of each were planted out as a seed orchard at Castle Grant and also at Ledmore in a field next to the nursery. Grafts were also planted in the main tree bank at Newton. Comment left on 30 December 2022 at 16:31 by Alan Fletcher
