South Strome Forest-horse extraction
Photograph is courtesy and copyright of Forestry Commission, Forest Research, Roslin, and provided with help from Glen Brearley. FR Photo number No A2856 taken by Stan Forrester.
Text reads as follows: ‘Loading the skidding arch with pulpwood in a rack in second thinning.’
As can be seen the arch was fixed to shafts that required a special harness for the horse – a lighter version of that required for carts. The arch had a series of chains. When these were placed around a few logs and pulled up tight to the arch by hand the links of the chain could then be locked into the slots on top of the arch.
Any comments and tales of working with this sledge would be very welcome.
