Photograph is courtesy and copyright of Forestry Commission, Forest Research, Roslin, and provided with help from Glen Brearley. FR Photo number No C3130 taken by I A Anderson.
Interest in the planting of colliery spoil heaps was evident in this early era with a photograph of tree cover on the spoil heaps at Newbattle Colliery, Midlothian.
The text reads; ‘Shows proximity of the human habitation to a spoil heap planted with Scots pine 62 years old. Very open and stunted, has suffered from smoke and exposure.’
