Two Forestry Ploughing Operators and Cat D7

Bert Legge left and Dod Irvine right holding on to the hydraulic rams on the back of most likely a CAT D7 which would normally be hitched to a mounted deep tine plough capable of going down to 90cms depth.
This ploughing tractor driven by Dod Irvine was normally used for ploughing in dry stony areas where pine crops had been felled. The theory was that the deep ploughing would smash up any iron pan and also cultivate the soil enabling Sitka spruce to grow as the next crop. The actual result was a bit of a battlefield, difficult to work in and growth improvement was often less than hoped for.
This machine would be a sister of MGN581L featured in photograph no 236.
