Cross section of Sitka spruce from Kirkhill Forest

The text reads as:
‘Cross section of Sitka spruce wood from Kirkhill Forest, Aberdeenshire, which shows poorly developed (winter) wood. x52 .’
The term winter was omitted from the text but looking at other samples this was what was being referred to. In this case the cells in the ‘winter wood’ have remained quite open with fairly normal thickness cell walls. The spring wood is startlingly open celled.
Possibly a mild winter at this point allowed the cells to function and grow all through the period albeit on a very reduced scale?
