‘Protection of larch grafts with polythene bags in the open nursery (some plants unprotected to serve as controls)’.
John Keenleyside has commented that the polythene bags would most likely have a fabric panel on one side to allow heat and condensation escape otherwise the graft would have heated up in the sunshine and also had a greater risk of fungal infections. Similar bags were used for controlled pollenation experiments.
John also recalls that when he was here as an assistant forester the office was a third of the size of the one shown above and contained a little wood burning stove and a table with just enough room to get around the edges. The head forester and his wife who did the payroll and clerical work had precedence of occupation and Colin Maclean as research forester had a place if there was space. John a mere assistant had to wait until all was clear or Colin was leaving and as it was, Colin had to shuffle out to allow John the space to get in.
Another small step in the long quest to improve the quality of the trees for planting in the future forests.
