The text reads as:
‘Pruning. Norway spruce
Drummond Hill Expt 11/38
Pruned trees in plot 2C and 6C. Note the healthy unpruned trees in the lower canopy of this H.C. (High Crown?) grade thinning.’
This stand of Norway spruce would gladden the heart of any forester and especially that of a sawmiller! Tall, very straight , lightly branched trees just beginning to look like a mature stand with some light coming through to the forest floor to encourage some undergrowth. Unfortunately the age of the trees are not recorded here but could well be some of the early plantings in Drummond Hill Forest where planting by the Forestry Commission started in 1923.
