‘Thinnings from good looking Scots pine near boathouse’

Historical photograph which provides hard evidence of the success of John Stirling Maxwell’s forest establishment on Corrour Estate. Checking over the details in his booklet on Loch Ossian Forest (elsewhere on this site) it appears that the Scots pine near the boathouse was planted around 1895 under the supervision of estate forester John Boyd.

Note the profile of the butts of some of the stacked Scots pine indicating laying in with axe and felling with handsaws.
