This is a Sitka spruce progeny trial set out in Kilmichael Block III - Expt No 1 P53.

The text reads ‘Tree No 131 Dalbeattie. A typical plot on better Juncus/Molina’

One of the many early trials country wide to improve the quality of Sitka spruce where young trees from known plus parents were planted out and monitored for growth characteristics.

Perhaps someone could explain the process as carried out at this time and the significance of the term ‘tree No 131’ and also identify the forester.
