Banff Field Club Records — Notable trees
David Paterson, Edinburgh, has provided some images from written proceedings from a Banff Field Club volume which had been passed to him by a relative.
David writes:
‘The 1915 abstract has a large number of girth measurements for Banffshire estates and elsewhere, including several at Duff House, with cross-reference to others at Balvennie, Forglen House, Cullen House, Craigston Castle –broadleaves and introduced conifers. It would appear that Duff House had planted three Sitka spruce around the first ones in the mid-1840`s, rivalling Castle Menzies.’
Included in the table are some abstract measurements from ‘Old and Remarkable Trees of Scotland’ published by the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland in 1865. Particular estates mentioned from this publication are Forglen, Tore of Troup, Craigston, Cullen, Balvenie, Duff House, Glenbucket and Gordon Castle amongst others.
