Native Pinewood visit to Glen Affric

At about this period there was an increasing activity on native pine wood management with a grant structure from the Forestry Commission to encourage new woodlands and forests using seedlings grown from seed collected from locally ancient native pine forests and broadleaf woodlands. The Forest Enterprise arm of the Forestry Commission turned its attention to the remnants of the ancient native pine wood that were located on the national forest estate and initiated a major programme of restoration of these ancient woodland sites. The initial efforts were directed at removal of non native Scots pine and other conifers from within and close proximity to the remnants that had been planted there many years previously. This was followed up by attempts to encourage natural regeneration from the remaining ‘granny pines’ and or collecting of cones for raising planting stock, fencing to reduce browsing pressure and in some cases planting new trees from seed collected locally.
