Culloden Forest History 1924-1951
The document is courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District and gives a fairly detailed account of the progress of the forest from its early days but does focus much on the then present situation of the forest in the early 1950s. The opening page begins with Roy Robinson’s (Lord Robinson) comments and he is fulsome in his description of the history format and describes the inclusion of photographs and map (neither to hand in this copy) as a contribution to one of the best histories he has examined. The brief comments from the Director Scotland (Henry C Beresford Peirse) follow but no great detail.
Much of the report would have been written by the then District officer Alastair (A M) Fraser and he outlines the history of forest establishment, the variety of soil types and the treatments and tree species required to achieve success in each type. There is quite some emphasis on thinning in Scots pine, Douglas fir and some other species with notes on the removal of ‘wolf’ trees and thinning every two to three years to mitigate the effects of windblow.
The senior staff list as usual heads up with the names of Divisional Officers and Conservators followed by the District officer and then the Foresters or Foremen in charge.
