Benmore Forester Training School students -1960

Date Added: 09 May 2017 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1960 Picture No: 3681

This one of a set of images from photocopier scans and is courtesy of the staff at Glenbranter Forest Office.

Little was known of the details of people apart from a couple of names written on one of the images but one former student Bob Boyd has been tracked down to Northern Ireland and has provided the following information:

‘Yes I know all the folk in your photo, four of them were my year 1958/60, they are the middle four, Bob Cuthbertson, Bill Mason, Ian Reid and Walter Mc Closkey.

The other two are Tom Deely on the left and Dick Cockell on right, they were my juniors.

Bill Mason was my roommate for the two years and he did take a lot of photos when at Benmore. I believe he worked mostly in west of Scotland and was head forester in work study for a period, when he retired he lived in Oban area.

I am fairly certain that photo was taken on shore of Loch Long near to where the old Ardentinney hotel was situated. Reference the three students in the background, the one in the blue shirt is myself, next to me is Maurice Clements and the one in bathing trunks I think is Fred Carty however I am not certain.

Bob Cuthbertson, Walter McCloskey, Maurice Clements, Fred Carty and myself are years 1958/60 and from Northern Ireland, Bill Mason was from Isle of Aran and Ian Reid from near Kilmarnock (also 1958/60). Dick Cockell was from Hastings and Tom Deely from somewhere in England, they were 1959/61 students.’

It is indeed near the Ardentinny Hotel. Directly across the road from this spot, there would be a tearoom.(56.045664, -4.909219)
