Photograph courtesy of Bill Irvine who snapped this shot in the barn at Kielder Forest which is an Alladin's cave of collected old equipment.

This base station would have been used in the main rooms in a Forest Office (generally where the admin. staff worked) and was the communications hub for the forest. Above the loudspeaker is series of three buttons which I assume changes the channels.

Please see enlarged photograph which shows the interior of the radio unit and its glass valves!

Don Amer adds 'Thanks for the email about the "Viscount" radio. The Storno "Viscount" is not a base station, but a mobile radio normally installed in vehicles. The radio in the photo has been set up to act as a base station, but is not base station equipment. I have installed dozens of these radios in FC vehicles and I was also commisioned to install about 20 of them in vehicles, belonging to a haulage firm in Glasgow. They were not an easy thing to install because of the requirement to run fairly heavy duty cabling from the radio, which was always fitted in the rear of the vehicle, to the battery and to the Control Box, which had to be positioned somewhere on the dashboard.'
