Culbin Sands and Findhorn over millennia
Sinclair M Ross a former meteorologist with the RAF had a very strong interest in the geological processes and development of the Culbin and Findhorn areas over the millennia and carried out extensive research and personal observations. Over the years he had a close working relationship with several Forestry Commission staff who managed Culbin Forest. Sinclair executed beautifully crafted drawings of old maps of the Culbin area from those of Timothy Pont dated 1590, Peter May dated 1758, Brodie Estate dated 1833, Fishing Dispute Map of 1858, Survey map of 1962 (but may in fact have been surveyed between the years between 1938-1950) and OS and Forestry Commission maps and aerial photographs dated 1968 and 1974.
The drawings in the attached PDF show the mapped variations in the coastline, the route of the Findhorn River, the lochs and the inundation process of the windblown sand dunes. This knowledge has enabled Sinclair to compile this simple yet detailed series of six graphic descriptions of the situations over very different time periods on how the present day coastline and its features developed over millennia from a coastline which was initially very close to present day Forres.
The family of Sinclair could not be contacted and the usual permissions for website placement were not put in place. It is hoped that the family would in the event be happy that this very interesting and detailed piece of research and his beautifully crafted presentation should be made available to a larger audience.
