A celebration in Findon Nursery

James Gordon was forester at Findon Forest in the Black Isle before and during WWII, and took several photographs of the workers in what is believed to be Findon Nursery. At this period, in war time conditions, labour to work in the forest and the nursery would have been very scarce and employing women and older children may have been the only way to grow the young trees for and to achieve any planting programmes.
This photograph shows two of the Forestry Commission staff in the tree nursery pouring a bottle of beer or ale in celebration of an unknown event. The man on the left is Robert Brown and on the right Jock Cameron both with wheel barrows loaded with folded material such as canvass or hessian. The trees in transplant lines behind look well grown and the pine on the left have no new or only very short new growth suggesting this is early spring or possibly early autumn.
