Road making in Ferness Forest

Photograph courtesy of Sandy Gordon, Nairn, whose father James Gordon was a long service forester in the Forestry Commission latterly at Ferness Forest, Nairnshire. Sandy also worked for seven years with the Commission as a mechanic based at Longman workshop.

A dramatic action shot as the blade of the BTD20 Dozer Registration 691ELM driven by George Maclean carves a route through a gravel knoll and fills up a depression to enable a forest road to be built through the forest area near Airdrie in Findhorn Valley.

The PDF shows another view of the uneven terrain in the forest and the work involved in pushing a road through. Note the felled timber stacked to the side following the felling of the road line strip.
