Early photograph taken in 1924 from a forestry album of 117 photographs compiled by an unknown Forestry Commission officer. No other information given.

The photograph caption is as above however it is not clear what is the forest area planted in 1923 at Drummond Hill Forest, Perthshire, but assume it is the bare hill area above the belt of broadleaves. Can anyone confirm?

Note the previous photograph No 3506 may be taken from roughly the same spot but looking the other way.

Norman, you posed the question as to "Where?" the planting in 1923 on Drummond Hill took place. I do not have the old planting or the last forester surveyed stock maps from 1990's to hand; but the distinctive triangular woodland in the mid-ground of the image, the road leaving the woodland below, the concavity of the slope away from the viewpoint and the scree/heather knoll from which the image was taken; all point to this being on the northern side of Drummond Hill.

Using the National Library of Scotland (NLS) website and the map viewer of Ordnance Survey, Six Inch scale, Surveyed 1898, published 1901, Perth and Clackmannan, Sheet XLVIII, SW; I would suggest that the image was taken from approximately where the FC road now loops around the knoll at NGR:273561, 745872, looking NE and that the uphill point of the wood is at NGR:275282, 746277; whilst the road emerges from the wood at NGR:274608, 746315. If this is correct, then the distant hill is Drummond Hill, with the 'Fort' site at its peak, within already established woodland, existing in 1898. Fortingall lies almost due N, on the northern side of Glen Lyon opposite this viewpoint. Comment left on 04 February 2017 at 21:59 by Bill Rayner

Hi Bill/Norman, hope you are both well. Bill, I'm pretty sure you're right about the location from where the photo was taken but the fort location is n't actually on the highest point; it's on knoll on the far side of the top (in the photo) at the eastern end.
