‘This was the estate's first trial of high tensile steel wire fencing with the use of two by one and a half inch droppers, giving a larger spacing between the fence posts. Alas the two middle plane wires were replaced by barbed wire two years later as the cattle managed to force their heads between the wires and wreck the fence. A tremendous pulling force could be used on this type of wire, hence the use of a special pulling key. The strainer post (a double railway sleeper) behind me was placed four feet into the soft bog soil and tied back with two wires driven into the ground.’

Note behind me in the distance the Forfar to Dundee railway line embankment that was eventually closed leading to a huge surplus of railway sleepers which the estate purchased and used on extensive fencing projects.

My old man was Gamekeeper on Lour. Leslie and me lived a field breadth from each other. I have great memories of Lour Estate.
